Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants often get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in almost all poker games.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complex at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an overwhelming collection of betting possibilities and because you have several players trying for the high hand, as well as several battling for the low hand.
